The Love Story of Imee Marcos and Tommy Manotok: A Love Tested by Power, Family, and Time

The romance between Imee Marcos and Tommy Manotok was one of the most tumultuous, colorful, and controversial love stories during the martial law era. Behind the powerful image of the first family, there was a personal battle that Imee was simultaneously facing—a story of love that went against tradition, expectations, and even the wishes of her own family.

How They Met

Imee Marcos was known as an intelligent and hardworking woman. She studied at Princeton, trained in theater in London, and was active in UP. Because of this, the standards set for her future husband were high. Many said that Imelda Marcos had a desire to marry her daughter to a man from a prominent family in Europe.

But everything changed when Imee met Tommy Manotok—a renowned golfer and PBA coach—at an antique shop in Baguio. The place was quiet, far from the noise of politics, and that’s where they first had a deep conversation. Their friendship quickly deepened and eventually, turned into a serious relationship.

Opponents and the First Conflict

The Marcos family, especially Imelda, did not like the relationship from the start. Tommy was separated from his first wife—a beauty queen—and since there is no divorce in the Philippines, everything became complicated. There are also old stories that Imelda’s objection had a personal origin: it is said that once in her youth, she loved a divorced man but did not marry him. Because of this, she did not want Imee to experience a similar situation.

Despite resistance, the two chose to fight for their love.

The Secret Marriage

Due to rising tensions, they decided to go to America secretly. On December 4, 1982, they married in Virginia in a simple civil ceremony. Although their families were absent, they fully intended to start a new life.

But when they returned to the Philippines, tensions within the first family flared up even more.

The Controversial “Abduction” of Tommy

On December 29, 1982, after they had dinner, Tommy suddenly disappeared. When Imee returned home, he never returned to their residence. This caused great concern for the Manotok family and the public.

Hours later, former PC chief Fidel Ramos said they received a letter allegedly from the NPA demanding a ransom. But the Manotok family immediately became suspicious because some government personnel had already arrived before the news of the ransom note was announced.

According to old reports, Imee went wild in Malacañang due to fear and anger. Some even said that she broke antique decorations because she felt that people close to her were not telling her something.

Several human rights groups also mentioned that Tommy may be in the custody of some government units—a theory that has not been proven but has become part of the conversation of the time.

Tommy’s Appearance After Six Weeks

After about a month and a half, the news came out: Tommy had been found and he appeared at a press conference with several government officials.

He said that the NPA kidnapped him and took him far away from the Sierra Madre mountains before he was rescued by the military. He also showed a photo of a man who was allegedly killed in the operation.

But many still have questions. Some say the man in the photo doesn’t look like a rebel. Others believe it could be an innocent civilian who was caught up in the conflict. Despite the speculation, Tommy has remained silent about any possible connection between the Marcos family and his disappearance.

Relationship Transformation and Family Acceptance

Over time, Imelda gradually accepted Tommy. Like many mothers, she also had the opportunity to accept the love of her son. Imee and Tommy had three children, and they tried to live a quiet life.

But after 17 years, their marriage ended in divorce. Despite this, they remained together for the sake of their children.

Changing the Final Stage of Their Story

When the Marcos administration fell in 1986, the family dynamic changed. Imee became closer to her mother and they understood each other better. When the Marcoses returned to the Philippines, Imee reemerged in politics—as a congressman, governor, and later, senator.

For others, their love story is not just a story of two people falling in love. It is a reflection of the complex times: how power, influence, personal feelings, and decisions that go against the wishes of many converge.

A Question That Still Balances the Public

At the end, there is a question that is often repeated by those who have read their story:

How far can you fight for the person you love when your own world opposes you?

If you were in this situation, what would you choose?

“SIXTEEN TONS” SOLD OVER 4 MILLION COPIES IN JUST WEEKS — AND THE MAN WHO MADE IT FAMOUS LEARNED IT FROM A COAL MINER’S SON. Tennessee Ernie Ford didn’t just sing this song. He lived every word of it. Written by Merle Travis — whose own father broke his back in Kentucky coal mines — “Sixteen Tons” carried the weight of real sweat, real debt, and real pain. Then in 1977, something remarkable happened. Travis and Ford finally shared the same stage. Two voices. One deep as the earth, the other warm as firelight. When Ford snapped his fingers and sang “another day older and deeper in debt,” the entire auditorium fell silent. It wasn’t a performance. It was a confession — from every working man who ever sold his body but refused to sell his soul. 70 years later, that snap still echoes. And if you listen closely, you might understand why millions couldn’t stop playing this song… and still can’t.

Freeway” began, it wasn’t just a song anymore. It was a confession. His voice carried the kind of defiance that doesn’t shout — it just lingers in your chest long after the last chord fades. 40,000 people stood under that open sky, and for a few minutes, every single one of them believed in the same simple dream — getting free. What Jerry Jeff Walker whispered to the crowd right after that final note still gives longtime fans chills to this day…
