A Tragedy That Awakened Many Parents

“ When I saw his story, it felt like he was my son too. ”
These were the first words uttered by a mother who watched the news about the death of Emman Aienza , the 19-year-old son of TV personality Kuya Kim Atienza .
Ever since news spread that Emman was found dead in her Los Angeles apartment on October 22, 2025 — still holding a piece of paper with lines that read “I tried. I’m tired.” — Filipinos have been talking non-stop online.
Now, Emman’s name is no longer just about social media fame or her TikTok videos about self-care and mental health , but a profound warning and lesson for parents: recognize, listen, and support your children before it’s too late.
“If I Were His Mother…”: A Mother’s Pain and Regret
“ If it were me, I wouldn’t leave him alone in LA. ”
This is the strong statement of an overseas Filipino mother in a viral video that has now reached more than 2 million views on Facebook.
According to her, she was deeply hurt when she watched Emman’s interview with Toni Gonzaga eleven months before her passing. “The kid is great, articulate, smart. But in the tone of his voice, you can tell he’s tired,” the woman said while crying.
He also said that after seeing the coroner’s report , he confirmed the cause of death was ligature hanging — and this proved that the signs of depression that people sometimes ignore are serious.
Emman’s Struggle: Bipolar Disorder, Bullying, and the Heavy “Ganda Culture”
In her TikTok videos, Emman repeatedly talks about her struggles with bipolar disorder and depression.
“When I’m manic, I feel unstoppable. But when I’m depressed, I feel invisible,”
said Emman in one of his posts that has now gone viral again after his passing.
She shared how the obsession with beauty standards on social media gradually destroyed her mental state.
“I’d wake up at 3 a.m. just to finish a 20-step skincare routine. I thought I was healing. But it was just another manic phase.”
In a diary entry obtained by the police, the following words were found:
“Healing hurts. I’m tired of pretending I’m okay.”
These words became the final proof of the battles he had endured alone for so long.
The Impact of the “Don’t Complain” Culture
According to some mental health experts, a large part of the problem is rooted in the Filipino culture of feeling sorry and keeping quiet.
“In our country, when you say you’re sad or want to see a psychiatrist, you’re often called ‘weak’ or ‘arte,’” explains Dr. Rhodora Lim , a Filipino-American psychologist.
He added, “Young people like Emman, they are often forced to be happy online because that’s what people want — but inside, they are broken.”
The Call: Stop Ignoring the Signs
Many expressed anger on social media after learning that Emman was allegedly being bashed before her death, especially because of some of her political posts about former President Duterte.
But for the parents, as the one who spoke in the viral video said, this reaction is wrong:
“He’s only nineteen. He’s still young. He’s mentally ill. He’s defenseless. No matter what his opinion is, he doesn’t deserve this ending.”
He called it a lesson and warning to all parents — especially Filipinos abroad:
“When your child says they’re tired, don’t just say it’s drama. Listen. Embrace it. Because sometimes, that’s the last chance.”
The Lesson: Whole Family, Safe Child
The woman who shared her story spoke not as a critic but as a mother with her own experience.
She recounted a time when she saw her daughter afraid of the nanny.
“He wasn’t even two years old at the time. He acted differently when we came. He was scared. So I sent the nanny away. From then on, I made sure that only me or my mother looked after him.”
He used that story as an example of how important a parent’s presence is at every stage of a child’s life — especially during the era of digital isolation.
“Our children today, you think they are connected to everyone because of social media, but in reality, they are more distant from us.”
A Last Message From a Mother
Before the interview ended, the lady spoke again while wiping away her tears:
“I don’t blame Emman’s parents. But I hope, all parents, we learn. Let’s watch over our children. Even if they are smart, even if they are independent — if they have a mental challenge, you can’t neglect them.”
He concluded with words that resonated with millions:
“Our children, let’s not give up. Because sometimes, just a hug is the difference between life and death.”
The Reflection: Emman Aienza, A Story of True Resistance
Emman ‘s story is not just entertainment or social media news. It is a reality check for Filipino families — both within the country and around the world.
In a time when we are quick to judge, comment, and cancel, we need to learn to listen with care.
Because as his family reminds us:
“Carry forward her compassion, courage, and kindness. That’s how she would want to be remembered.”
🕯️ Rest in peace, Emman Aienza (2006–2025). May your story save others who silently suffer.
