Charlotte, NC — Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, 23, was fatally stabbed on a Charlotte light rail train on August 22, 2025, leaving her family, friends, and coworkers mourning the loss of a young woman who fully embraced the American Dream with courage and determination.

A Life of Compassion and Determination

Zarutska arrived in North Carolina from Kyiv, Ukraine, in August 2022 with her mother and two younger siblings, fleeing the devastation of war. Despite language barriers, she quickly adapted to her new life, enrolling in English classes and working tirelessly to support her family.

Her uncle, who requested anonymity, described her as “a very, very caring person” who “loved to help people.” In just three years, Zarutska became a valued member of her community, making strong connections with neighbors, coworkers, and residents at the assisted living facility in Huntersville, N.C., where she worked.

Her funeral service drew more than 100 people from the facility alone, showing the profound impact she made in such a short time.

Tragic Incident on Charlotte Light Rail

On the night of her death, Zarutska was returning home after finishing her shift at Zepeddies Pizzeria, where she had worked her way up from an entry-level position to line cook.

Authorities reported that Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, along with federal charges for causing death on a mass transportation system. Video footage of the unprovoked attack has sparked nationwide outrage and renewed concerns about public safety on mass transit.

Pursuing the American Dream

Even after experiencing war and relocation, Zarutska remained optimistic about her future. She aspired to become a veterinary assistant, attended community college classes to improve her English, and recently bought her first car.

“She was so proud of saving enough money to buy a car and was preparing to get her license,” her uncle said. “Her first planned trip was to visit us.”

Her dedication reflected not only her ambitions but also her love for her family and her determination to build a better life.

Community and Family Remembrance

Colleagues at Zepeddies Pizzeria described her as an “incredible employee” and “true friend.” The restaurant’s owner attended her funeral, joining dozens of coworkers and neighbors who came to honor her memory.

Her father, who could not travel from Ukraine, attended the funeral via FaceTime, along with her grieving mother. While the Ukrainian embassy offered to repatriate her remains, the family chose to keep her in the U.S., honoring her deep bond with her adopted home.

Iryna Zarutska is survived by her parents, Anna Zarutska and Stanislav Zarutskyi, her siblings Valeriia and Bohdan, her life partner Stas Nikulytsia, and extended family.
