In the world of showbiz, stars always seem to be on top—admired, watched, and seemingly safe from any storm. But for veteran actor Ricardo Cepeda, the past eleven months have been a dark nightmare he never thought he would experience. In an exclusive interview with Julius Babao, Ricardo once again opens up about his imprisonment, the hardships inside the cell, and the sweet taste of temporary freedom.
The Sudden Arrest: A Scene That Was Thought to be a Joke
It all started in October 2023 while Ricardo was at a ribbon cutting event at a mall. The actor recounted how things happened quickly. He initially thought it was just part of a “gimmick” or “prank” to promote his series Batang Quiapo , in which he plays a character involved in illegal activities [04:02]. But his laughter turned to shock when he realized that real police officers were approaching him with an arrest warrant for a syndicated estafa case .

“I was so bewildered,” Ricardo said [04:51]. As a mere brand ambassador for a company, he couldn’t understand why he was caught up in the illegal transactions of its owners. He described his first two days in jail as a state of shock, unable to believe that his freedom had suddenly disappeared because of something he had no direct involvement in [05:16].
The Calvary in Cagayan Provincial Jail
From Quezon City, Ricardo was transferred to Sanchez Mira, Cagayan—a trip that took him away from his family. Here he experienced the true meaning of prison life. He shared the conditions inside: the cramped cell with double-deck beds, the intense heat that later turned into the freezing “cold season,” and the limited food rations [02:54].
Despite the hardships, Ricardo chose to be productive. He exercised using simple equipment inside to maintain his health, which resulted in his weight loss of up to 30 lbs [07:18]. He also became a “resident celebrity” inside, where fellow inmates often asked him about showbiz stories and his co-stars like FPJ and Coco Martin [24:23]. But behind the stories, the hardest part were the nights—the “lights out” where the only company he had were his thoughts and the fear for his family [26:39].
The Strength of Family and Faith
Amid the ordeal, Ricardo’s anchor was his wife, Marina Benipayo, and their children. Marina described the eleven months as “running on adrenaline,” during which she did everything she could to protect her husband’s name and support their family [41:14]. Ricardo’s children also showed great resilience, refusing to believe the accusations and continuing to pray for their father [49:55].

Ricardo shared that this experience further strengthened his faith in God. “In His time,” became his mantra as he awaited the court’s decision [17:45]. Thousands of prayers from friends, fans, and even strangers gave him the strength to not give up despite the country’s slow justice system.
The Return and New Beginning
In September 2024, the court finally allowed Ricardo to post bail after finding the evidence against him weak [30:29]. Although this was only a “provisional liberty” as the trial was ongoing, it was a great relief for the actor to be able to hug his loved ones again.
Now, Ricardo is ready to get back to work. He shared some good news: his character in Batang Quiapo is set to return after Coco Martin personally sent him a message [54:02]. Aside from acting, Ricardo also wants to use his experience to be a voice for those who are “wrongfully accused” and experiencing the slowness of the justice system [53:14].
Ricardo Cepeda’s story is a reminder of courage and the power of truth. Despite the scars left by his imprisonment, he emerged stronger, more confident, and ready to face the new chapter of his life with his head held high. A true triumph of justice and family love.
