Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ Heartwarming Reunion Catches Attention Amid Injury Recovery

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made a public appearance during his recovery, attending the Kansas City Royals’ home opener at Kauffman Stadium. Mahomes, who is working his way back from a torn ACL, took a break from rehab to support one of his business ventures while also reconnecting with a personal piece of his family history tied to the Minnesota Twins.

Patrick Mahomes Royals Ownership and Family Ties to Twins

Mahomes is part of the Royals’ ownership group led by chairman and CEO John Sherman. The Chiefs star attended the Royals’ matchup against the Twins as he continues recovering from a torn ACL suffered in December.

But Mahomes has ties to the Twins, too. As Royals broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre noted during Monday’s broadcast, Mahomes’ father pitched for the Twins.

And Minnesota was in Kansas City in 1995 when Mahomes’ dad left the team because Patrick was born.

The Twins lost 4-1 in Oakland on Sept. 17, 1995 which is the day Mahomes was born. But the Twins traveled that day to Kansas City ahead of a three-game series against the Royals, which started on Sept. 18.

Mahomes’ parents asked a Twins pitcher to be Patrick’s godfather: LaTroy Hawkins. Another funky little quirk to the Mahomes story: Hawkins pitched for 11 teams* in the majors for 21 seasons, starting in 1995.

Hawkins’ last appearance in the majors came in Game 4 of the 2015 American League Championship Series when the Royals thumped the Blue Jays 14-2 in Toronto. He didn’t record an out in the seventh inning, which began when Hawkins walked Salvador Perez, who is still the Royals catcher.

These days, Hawkins is the Twins bullpen coach, so he had an opportunity to meet with Mahomes at Monday’s game. The Twins shared photos of Mahomes meeting with Hawkins and some Minnesota players. The pictures include a cute shot of Mahomes when he was a little kid in a Twins uniform.Có thể là hình ảnh về bóng đá và văn bản cho biết 'h. Mahomes Injury Update and Rehab Progress

Mahomes continues to recover from knee surgery after suffering a torn ACL & LCL in December. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an update while speaking at the NFL League Meeting in Phoenix.

“He’s doing great,” Reid said. “He spends a ton of time in the building. … He’s in there for seven hours a day. It’s showing, the progress. Now, to tell you a timeline? I mean, I know what he’s striving for. We’ll just see where it goes from there.”

Reid declined to confirm a specific return date and emphasized that recovery timelines vary.

“If he’s good to go, he’ll go. If he’s not, then we’ll manage that,” Reid said. “Everybody’s different. Everybody heals different, everybody’s injuries are a little bit different.”

The Chiefs and Mahomes recently posted a video showing himself doing light throwing, which signals progress as he works toward a potential return.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport addressed Mahomes’ recovery on “The Insiders,” noting that while the video is encouraging, the situation remains uncertain.

“This is good news,” Rapoport said. “That said, there is still some uncertainty. There’s a lot of uncertainty because he is just three months out from a nine-to-twelve-month recovery.”
