Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes sends clear message to Lions after postgame brawl

Patrick Mahomes put together one of his best performances of the season thus far in the Kansas City Chiefs‘ victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday night. However, his performance was somewhat overshadowed by a postgame scrum between the two teams, which Mahomes addressed in his on-field postgame interview.

Mahomes was as sharp as ever on Sunday night, throwing for 257 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding in 32 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown on the ground. This was enough to come away with a 30-17 victory over the Lions to help get the Chiefs back on the right track heading into Week 7.

Unfortunately, it seems like frustration took over for Lions star safety Brian Branch after the game. After the final kneel down by Mahomes, players from both teams began to shake hands as the clock ticked down.

Instead of following suit with most of his teammates, Branch decided to decline Mahomes’ attempt at a handshake before swinging on Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, which sparked Smith-Schuster hitting Branch back and both teams ultimately getting involved in the fray.

The incident takes away from what was a very entertaining game throughout, which Mahomes alluded to in his postgame interview on the field with NBC’s Melissa Stark.

“I mean, we play the game in between the whistles,” said Mahomes. “They can do all the extracurricular stuff they want to do. But we play the game in between the whistles.”

Clearly, in the moment, Mahomes didn’t exactly take kindly to both being snubbed of a postgame pleasantry by Branch and then sparking the on-field altercation.

In his defense, even Lions head coach Dan Campbell largely agreed with him about Branch’s actions, taking exception to the altercation and calling his player’s decision to spark the fight “inexcusable”.

The Chiefs ultimately got the last laugh where it matters most, which is on the field. On the other hand, for Branch, there may very well be some kind of disciplinary action from the league coming his way. So chances are, Mahomes likely won’t lose too much sleep over Branch’s actions, even if he did seem to be irritated by the situation at the time.
