Amidst the dream of bringing home a better future for his family, a tragic tragedy befell a compatriot working as a bartender in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Every drop of sweat and sacrifice of our Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) is usually accompanied by hope, but in this story, hope was replaced by bitterness and deep sorrow. The victim, a native of Tarlac, was found dead inside his bedroom, an incident that not only caused sadness for his family but also caused fear and anger in the entire Filipino community abroad.
It all started with a seemingly ordinary love story abroad. In the midst of missing his family, the bartender found the love of a Filipina who worked as a domestic helper. At first, their relationship served as a strength despite the hardships of the job. But like many relationships, they came to the point of separation. What many did not expect was the depth of resentment that the woman harbored, who according to reports could not accept the end of their relationship. The former love affair turned into a dark plan that ended in a heinous crime.
According to the latest updates on the case as of March 2026, the ex-girlfriend, who was a domestic helper, is currently in the custody of authorities in Saudi Arabia. The discovery of the bartender’s body inside his room was the key to revealing everything. The victim was found covered in blood and lifeless, a scene that those who saw it will never forget. With the help of a thorough investigation by the police in Jeddah and the cooperation of our Embassy, the suspect was quickly identified due to late communications and evidence recovered from the crime scene.
It was very painful for the family in Tarlac to see their loved one return in a coffin. In videos circulating on social media, a mother can be seen sobbing in disbelief that her son, who was still young and full of dreams, was taken from her in this way. Every OFW is considered a hero, and seeing a hero killed by his own countrymen is a double blow to our morality. The question many are asking is: How could a person take the life of the one he once loved just out of jealousy or anger?
Under the strict laws of Saudi Arabia, these types of crimes carry heavy penalties. As the case unfolds, our Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) continue to monitor to ensure that the plight of our compatriots is not forgotten. Although the suspect is in custody, the fight for true justice is still long. All angles must be proven to achieve the justice Tatang deserves—a title of respect for our bartender who is known for his hard work and kind-heartedness.
This tragedy also serves as a warning and reminder to our OFWs about the importance of mental health and good relationships. Life abroad is no joke; sadness and pressure can push a person down the wrong path if not addressed promptly. But violence will never be acceptable as a solution to any problem of the heart. The loss of our fellow bartender is a great loss not only to his family but to the entire ranks of Filipino workers who work hard abroad.
As the final decision of the court in Jeddah is awaited, the family remains steadfast in their call. It is not enough for the suspect to be imprisoned; they want to feel that their son’s life was valued by our government and the country he served. With every tear shed by the parents who greeted the coffin at the airport, the call for stronger protection for our workers in the Middle East is reborn.
Let us continue to pray for the repose of the soul of our fellow bartender and for the courage of his family. May this bitter story be the last news we hear about violence between Filipinos abroad. Justice will come, and amidst the darkness of that room in Jeddah, the sun of truth will also shine, freeing the grief of those left behind.
