JASON IVLER – THE SO-CALLED HOT PRISONER OF BILIBID

On November 18, 2009, at 11 p.m., the most controversial road rage killing occurred. The victim in the incident was Renato Victor Ebarle Jr., son of former Presidential Chief of Staff Renato Ebarle Sr. According to witnesses, he was shot and killed by Jason Ivler, nephew of singer and songwriter Freddie Aguilar. According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred on Santolan Avenue, Quezon City. According to them, the assailant entered the victim’s car and shot him several times.

The media called the search for Ivler one of the largest manhunts ever conducted by authorities. When the young man was arrested, the public called Ivler a “sexy prisoner.” 27-year-old Renato Victor Ebarle Jr. was just starting out in his life and career. He is the eldest and only son of Renato Sr. Although his father was involved in politics, he took a simpler life and made a name for himself in human resource management.

When he passed away, he was a recruitment manager at Peninsula Manila. According to people around Renato Jr., he was a kind and humble person. They added that Renato Jr. always told people not to treat him as special even though he was the son of a politician. When people who knew Renato Jr. learned what happened to him, they could not believe it because they knew him and would never have been involved in a road rage. They immediately issued statements that what happened was a murder.

If this is how people perceive Renato Jr., you will hear the opposite when it comes to Jason Ivler. Jason Ivler was born on January 7, 1982 in Massachusetts, USA. He comes from an influential family. He is the son of Marlene Aguilar and American Robert Ivler. Marlene is the sister of the famous folk singer and songwriter Freddie Aguilar. Based on interviews with Marlene, Ivler was only two years old when his father passed away.

Marlene met her husband in the Philippines but he was allegedly killed by a hitman in Bangkok, Thailand. After his death, she raised Ivler alone and he is a kind-hearted person. He attended Hawaii Pacific University where he was on the Dean’s Lister and graduated with an AB Psychology degree. In a news network interview with Marlene in 2010 after Jason’s father died, she was linked to various men.

Among them is allegedly a Colombian arms dealer and a wanted criminal who is serving a life sentence in the United Kingdom. Later, she married Stephen Pollard, an economist who works as a consultant at the Asian Development Bank. The road rage incident was not the first time Ivler was involved in a brawl as in August 2004, she was also involved in a car crash that resulted in the death of former Congressman and Presidential Technical Assistant Nestor Ponce Jr. while his wife sustained injuries.

According to traffic investigator SPO3 Alexander Galang, Ivler was driving a vehicle with diplomatic plates. He lost control of the Toyota van, causing it to veer into the other lane, where it collided with the Isuzu Trooper driven by Nestor Ponce Jr. Authorities charged him with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property for Ponce’s death. He was also charged with reckless imprudence resulting in slight physical injuries for his wife, Evangeline Ponce.

In September 2004, 22-year-old Ivler pleaded guilty. The judge in the case allowed him to post bail and temporarily leave jail while awaiting trial. However, according to reports, he was spotted in Zamboanga City as he allegedly attempted to board a ferry to leave the country for Malaysia. The Bureau of Immigration then issued an order preventing him from leaving the Philippines.

But in 2007, while awaiting trial, people were surprised when Ivler left the Philippines and went to America. There, he joined the US Army and became part of the 25th Infantry Division stationed in Hawaii. After a year, he was discharged under honorable conditions. Two years later, his evasion of authorities ended when he returned to the Philippines and was involved in a road rage incident that resulted in the death of Renato Jr.

The authorities did not catch him because he immediately went into hiding. While the manhunt for him was going on, his mother, Marlene, was constantly giving interviews to reporters. In an interview, she said that the people behind what was happening to her son and their family were the Central Intelligence Agency or better known as the CIA. According to her, they were punishing her because she did not follow American laws.

She also said that her son is being made a scapegoat by powerful Americans who want him to suffer. According to Marlene, her essays on the internet anger Americans so in order to get revenge, they turn their anger on her son Jason. Because of these statements by Marlene, people could not help but dig into her posts on the internet and here they discovered about her saying that Pope Francis is “Pope Satan.”

People who have seen her online behavior say that Marlene’s actions are really strange compared to a normal person. Almost two months after the murder of Renato Jr., authorities did everything they could to find and arrest Ivler. Their search here seemed to end with the arrest of an OFW in Qatar, but the authorities admitted that they made a mistake because it was not Ivler.

In January 2010, exactly two months after the road rage killing, the NBI tracked down his whereabouts. According to an NBI agent, they found him in an underground room but because he was armed with a baby Armalite with a bandolier, it seemed unlikely that he would be captured alive. Ivler and the NBI agents exchanged gunfire and he shot two NBI agents. But one shooter decided to shoot Ivler in the shoulder and stomach, making it difficult for him to fire his baby Armalite.

He was immediately rushed to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center. According to the medical report, the bullet that hit his stomach penetrated his large intestine, requiring surgery to remove his spleen. In Marlene’s room, there is a hidden panel in the wardrobe where one or two people can hide. The NBI expects that catching Ivler will not be easy, especially since he has a military background.

On their way to Ivler’s house at number 23 Hillside Drive, Blue Ridge Subdivision in Quezon City, stairs were immediately built to enter the house. Ivler’s house was immediately surrounded. Marlene Aguilar, the suspect’s mother, appeared before the NBI. At first, she pleaded with the operatives, “You don’t have a search warrant. He’s already on the stairs… if you can get a gun… I’m sorry, I just freaked out.” She was even shown Jason’s room to say that her son was not there.

But what the NBI is wondering is, if no one was sleeping there, why was there water on the bathroom floor, the towel was wet, and the air conditioner in the room was on? The NBI searched for about an hour and a half, and then they heard gunshots. They were with the NBI team in Jason’s room. An NBI agent at the time said that he just saw him hit by shrapnel in the chest. The exchange of gunfire lasted for more than 10 minutes. Ivler rushed out of his hiding place.

He already had a gun, he was holding a baby Armalite and caliber .45, he was wearing a bandolier full of bullets. Compared to the photos of Jason that came out, his hair is now long, he has a mustache and a beard. Jason was immediately taken out of the house to be taken to the hospital. Marlene Aguilar was immediately taken into custody by the operatives. Several other housemates were also arrested. At the emergency room of the Quirino Memorial Medical Center, he was immediately given treatment, as were NBI Agent Labao and Attorney Lito Magno.

According to the NBI, Ivler’s actions indicate that he is willing to not be captured alive. You can see from his eyes that he really wants to kill, so there is nothing we can do but shoot back. Marlene was also arrested by the NBI and immediately charged with obstruction of justice for her attempt to divert the attention of the authorities so that she could protect her son. In interviews, she pointed out that the one who actually shot Renato Jr. was Ivler’s British bodyguard, Mark Hauser.

Hauser, on the other hand, strongly denied any involvement in the incident. Authorities dismissed Marlene’s allegations because she did not have enough evidence to support her accusations. Witnesses who saw the incident also denied the bodyguard’s involvement because according to them, they clearly saw Ivler shoot Renato Jr.

Hauser was asked if he had access to Jason’s ammunition and gun, and he said he did not have access to any weapons at that time. According to Hauser, he and Ivler were not together on the day Ebarle was killed because he was at Marlene’s house. On April 6, 2010, after Ivler recovered from his wounds, he was immediately taken to the Quezon City Jail Annex. While her son was in jail, Marlene Aguilar did not stop and was always in the news.

Renato Jr.’s father, Ebarle Sr., revealed that Ivler was receiving special treatment inside the jail. When Marlene found out, she openly challenged him to a fight in front of the camera. When photos and videos of Ivler in the jail surfaced, the public did not like it because to them it seemed like he was receiving VIP treatment. Because of this, the warden of the Quezon City Jail Annex was removed from his post.

The victim’s father, Ebarle Sr., responded to Marlene’s challenge with a fist fight and said that he should direct his anger at her husband, Stephen Pollard, because he allegedly tipped off the NBI about Ivler’s whereabouts. If alcohol was indeed brought inside and there was drinking, bringing in women, that would be a violation. BJMP Director Dial inspected Ivler’s cell. This was due to photos and videos that emerged that allegedly violated prison rules.

A day after the ABS-CBN report came out, Ivler appeared before the media and denied any special treatment he received. He said that was untrue because all inmates here receive fair and equal treatment. They are claiming that the picture was taken here but it was while he was free before he was charged. The women in the photo are his cousins and fans who were close to his mother and came to get autographs.

She also defended the mother’s controversial statement that she would tolerate whatever she wanted inside the prison. Marlene said, “Whatever treatment is being sold there, even if my child wants it, I’ll pay for it as a loving mother.” Asked if Jason gets it, he said he really doesn’t. Despite this, it is clear from the video taken inside the cell that Ivler seems to invite whoever he wants. He said that he wants a “hot stranger” and that he doesn’t need to know their name.

Ivler was charged with murder and Marlene was not jailed for obstruction of justice because she posted bail. When the trial began in November 2015, the prosecution presented fifteen pieces of evidence they had gathered, including the gun Ivler used to kill Renato Jr. This was found by the NBI at their home in Quezon City where he was arrested. They not only presented evidence but also presented witnesses to what happened.

Ivler’s camp said he was at a birthday party in Makati from 10:15 p.m. on November 18 to 3:00 a.m. on November 19. They presented the people who were allegedly with him at the party but the judge of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 84 did not believe him and he was found guilty of murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 40 years.

He was also ordered to pay the family of Renato Jr. 9.37 million in damages. The judge also ordered the Quezon City Jail Annex to transfer Ivler to the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa. Ivler’s camp appealed the sentence handed down to him but in December 2017, the Court of Appeals agreed with the decision that the sentence was appropriate. In addition to their decision, they increased the damages to PHP 3,988,000 with an interest rate of 6% per annum.

In total, the total amount that the Court of Appeals ordered him to pay to the family of Renato Jr. is 10.1 million. Renato Sr. did not attend the promulgation of the case because according to him, he cannot forgive or see the face of the person who killed his son. He is disappointed that the death penalty has been abolished in the Philippines because if it could be done, he would do everything to make it the punishment for Ivler.

According to a news agency interview with him in 2015, he still cannot accept the death of his son. To this day, Ivler still denies that he was responsible for what happened. He admitted that he was at fault for Secretary Ponce’s death in the car crash and apologized to the Ponce family, but he strongly denied what happened to Ebarle Jr. In November 2010, the Supreme Court dismissed Ivler’s reckless imprudence case in Ponce’s death due to double jeopardy.

When reporters asked Marlene what her message was to Ebarle Jr.’s family after the trial, she said, “My son did not kill these people. God decides who lives or dies and God decided that Jason Ivler should live. You question that and you are questioning God.” If you listened to this video until the end, thank you very much for watching this episode.
