From “Perfect Family” Vlogs to Ashes: The Shocking Truth Behind the Mother Who Set Herself and Three Children on Fire in Bulacan

‼️TRENDING CASE‼️MOTHER HAS NO MERCY ON HER CHILDREN AND HERSELF

In the world of social media, it’s easy to be fooled by everything. We see the smiles, the happy family outings, the children’s “milestones,” and the seemingly perfect marriage of a couple. We often get caught up in the “hopefully everything.” But behind the filters and edited videos, sometimes a very dark truth is hidden that no one notices—until it’s too late.

This is the story of a tragedy that shocked not only Barangay San Vicente, Bulacan, but the entire country. A story of love turned to ashes, of dreams consumed by fire, and of a mother who, overwhelmed by the weight of her burden, did what no one could stomach: end the lives of her own children along with herself.

The Day Everything Changed

It was Thursday, May 15, 2025. A typical day in a quiet subdivision in Bulacan. Neighbors were busy with their chores, children were playing, and the sun was shining brightly. No one would have guessed that inside the Aspero family’s house, hell was brewing.

Around noon, the silence was suddenly broken. “Fire! There’s a fire!” People shouted. The smoke quickly thickened, black and acrid. It didn’t smell like burning charcoal or dry leaves. According to eyewitnesses, it smelled like chemicals—the smell of thinner, the smell of gas, and the smell of burning mattresses.

The neighbors responded quickly. Solidarity. Some took buckets, some tried to break down the gate. But something was strange. The door and gate of the house were locked from the inside. It seemed as if they were deliberately closed so that no one could enter—and more importantly, so that no one could leave.

When a male neighbor broke down the door, they were exposed to a scene they would carry in their memories for the rest of their lives.

In the bathroom, siblings Kimwell Zan, five years old, and Kyle, three years old, were found. They were said to be still crying when they were taken out, still fighting for their lives. The youngest, Cairo, just one year old, was found dead in bed. Also inside the house was their mother—Joyce Rodrigo, 28 years old.

Their bodies were burned. Their homes were destroyed. And as their homes burned to ashes, questions arose: Why? How could a mother known for being loving and “hands-on” with her children do this?

The “Perfect Mom” on Social Media

If you look at Joyce’s Facebook and YouTube before the incident, you would think she was very lucky in life. She is a BSIT graduate, intelligent, and well-educated. She used to work at Odyssey in Fairview before she met her husband, Kimwell Aspero, a respected Police Colonel in the Maritime Group.

In her vlogs, you can see Joyce’s dedication. She shows off her routine: waking up early, cooking breakfast, cleaning the house, and patiently taking care of three young children. She is the definition of a “light of the home.”

She is very proud of her family. Whenever her children have an achievement—moving up ceremony, baptism, birthday—Joyce always posts. Her captions are always full of love and gratitude. Even her husband is not immune to her sweet posts. She calls him the “responsible pillar of the home” and always congratulates him on anniversaries and Father’s Day.

In the eyes of the public, they are the family that many dream of. The husband is a police officer with a good rank, the wife is a beautiful and hardworking vlogger, and the children are lively and healthy. They often eat out and go for walks. There is no trace of sadness. There is no trace of hardship.

But as they say, social media is a big stage where we are all actors. And behind the curtain of Joyce’s life, there is a script that gradually turns into a tragedy.

The Secret Inside the House

As authorities investigate the incident, the mask of their “happy family” slowly peels away. This was no accident. This was a deliberate crime. A parricide .

According to eyewitness accounts and stories, before the fire, Joyce was seen going outside to turn off the water line and lock the gate. She is said to have poured gas and thinner on her children and herself before lighting the fire. There are also rumors that the eldest child, Kimwell Zan, told responders, “Mama poured it on us.”

What pushed her? This is where the revelations that heated up netizens and broke the hearts of fellow mothers came in.

A blotter report came out from the barangay. A few days before the fire, Joyce approached the officials. She complained about the problems with her husband and the alleged interference of her mother-in-law. They were supposed to be brought before the barangay to sort out the problem, but it never came. The fire had already preceded them.

A netizen who identified himself as a neighbor said that Joyce’s mother-in-law is at their house almost every day. As we know in Filipino culture, the issue of mother-in-law is one of the heaviest burdens for a daughter-in-law, especially if you feel like you have no voice in your own household.

But the more intense explosion was about money.

Screenshots of Joyce’s convo with a friend went viral. Here, a mother’s desperation was seen. She borrowed P500—five hundred pesos—just to buy milk and food for her child. She was sick at the time, with the flu and a cold, so she couldn’t breastfeed.

THREE CHILDREN BURN IN STA MARIA BULACAN

The revelation? The allowance her Police Colonel husband gives her is only P2,500 per week.

Read it again: Two thousand five hundred pesos for a week. For a family with three young children, there are bills for electricity, water, internet, and food. With the high cost of living today, P2,500 is still not enough for one person’s groceries, let alone an entire family?

Joyce said in the chat that the P500 goes to the massage because of her physical pain, and the remaining P2,000 she manages to save for a few days. It runs out quickly. In the chat, you can feel Joyce’s shame about taking out a loan, but she has no choice. For her child. She said that if she could only work, she would, but how? She is taking care of three children in a row (5, 3, and 1). She has no helper. She is all by herself.

The Burden of Postpartum Depression and Financial Abuse

This tragedy has sparked heated debate about the mental health of mothers. Many believe that Joyce suffered from severe Postpartum Depression (PPD) that was exacerbated by the situation.

PPD is no joke. It’s the feeling of being completely overwhelmed. The fatigue that doesn’t go away with sleep. The feeling that you’re alone in the fight even though you’re married. Add to that the financial problems—your typical husband has a good job but you’re begging for pennies for your child’s milk. It’s called Financial Abuse . Denying your husband enough resources to make him lose control and become dependent.

Imagine Joyce’s situation: Exhausted from raising three children, sick, penniless, with an enemy mother-in-law, and her husband always away for work (or whatever reason). Where will she find strength? Where will she run?

Some say she might just be “crazy.” But a mother doesn’t go crazy for no reason. A mother naturally wants to protect her children. For her to reach the point of killing them and herself, it means she is at the peak of despair. She might be thinking, “I don’t want them to suffer anymore. I’m going to be with them so they won’t be miserable when I’m gone.” This is a distorted thought caused by severe depression.

The Father’s Side and the Citizen’s Anger

Kimwell, the police father, uploaded a video while crying. He asked God, “Why them? I wish it was just me.” Some felt sorry for him, but many were angry.

Why? Because of the issue of neglect. The question of the people: If the P2,500 allowance is true, how did he endure that much being given to his family while he has a rank? Where does his salary go? There are speculations on social media that there is another woman, although this has not been confirmed. But the blotter report itself that proves that there was a fight between the couple is enough to say that the pillar of the home has not been a peace-maker.

Netizens were even more outraged when they learned that Kimwell had even filed a Parricide lawsuit against his deceased wife . For many, this was “hand washing.” Yes, Joyce lit the fire, but who gave her the wick? Who pushed her off the cliff?

In the end, the two were buried separately. The children were in Bulacan, while Joyce was taken home to Batangas. Even in death, they were separated. A very painful end for a mother who only wanted to have a family.

Lesson for All

The story of Joyce and her children is not just news. It is a slap in the face of society.

For husbands: It’s not enough to give money. It has to be enough. And more than money, your wife needs your ears and your heart. “How are you?” is sometimes more important than a gift. Don’t let your wife take care of the family alone while you’re “busy” outside. Depression is real, and neglect is deadly.

For in-laws and relatives: Interference is destructive. Let the couple develop their own strategy. Your role is to guide, not dictate and add stress.

And for all of us: Let’s not immediately believe what we see on social media. The happiest photos sometimes hide the saddest stories. Let’s learn to be sensitive. Say hello to our mom friends who always seem to be “okay.” Maybe behind their vlogs and posts, they are actually asking for help.

Kimwell Zan, Kyle, and Cairo are gone. Joyce is also gone. Justice? Perhaps it is difficult to achieve on earth. But hopefully, their deaths will serve as a wake-up call for many. That a mother’s mental health is a matter of life and death. That family should be cared for, not just on Facebook, but in real life.

Farewell, Joyce and the angels. I hope in the afterlife, there will be no more pain, no more hunger, and no more tears to be shed.
