But this hope and dream suddenly disappeared and was replaced by a nightmare that shook not only their province but the entire country.

The Family’s Hope

Eden Joy Villete, 21 years old, is an Architecture student at Occidental Mindoro State College (OMSC) in San Jose. The second youngest of six siblings, she is considered the hope of her family. Naturally intelligent, hardworking, and known for her kindness, Eden Joy is described as a model student. She is active in organizations, serves as a student leader, and above all, is “No Boyfriend Since Birth” (NBSB)—a testament to her dedication to her studies and respect for her parents.

Due to the distance between their house and the school, he was forced to rent an apartment in Barangay 7, San Jose. His parents, Perlito and Violeta, are confident that their son is safe because they have inspected the area—there is a gate and security seems to be good.

The Disturbing Silence

The Villete family has become accustomed to frequent communication. Video calls, chats, and text messages connect them every day. On the evening of June 27, 2023, the couple happily spoke to Eden Joy. She was reviewing for her finals. They even reminded her to eat and rest.

But two days later, communication suddenly stopped. Eden Joy stopped responding to messages. Her phone just rang and rang until she could no longer be contacted. At first, the family thought she might have just recharged or gone out with friends. But a mother had a different idea. Aling Violeta was restless. She knew it was not her daughter’s habit to not show emotion.

The Offensive Smell

On June 30, Aling Violeta decided to drop off her son in San Jose. Upon arriving at the apartment, she was greeted by deafening silence and darkness. She saw her son’s slippers and shoes outside. She knocked but no one answered.

With the help of Eden Joy’s friends, they tried to find out what was wrong with her. But as they approached the door, they were greeted by an unpleasant and pungent smell—a smell that some thought came from a deceased animal.

When they peeked inside, a scene was revealed that broke the mother’s heart. They saw Eden Joy’s feet and a blanket. They had to break down the door because it was locked. That’s where the girl’s lifeless body was confirmed to be found, in a state of decomposition, and uncovered.

The Investigation and Speculations

Authorities responded immediately. Initial examination revealed six wounds on the victim’s body. They also suspected that she had been sexually assaulted.

The investigation was initially difficult. It was discovered that there was no working CCTV inside the apartment complex, and even the barangay CCTV was broken. There was no “digital footprint” that could immediately point to the culprit.

This led to various speculations. Some suspected the apartment owner’s son, which led to criticism on social media. Eden Joy’s “Mobile Legends” friends who often visited her were also investigated, but they were proven to have solid alibis.

Even the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has come to the rescue, conducting a re-autopsy on Eden Joy’s body even though it was already buried. The cry for justice has resounded, and a reward has been raised by the community for anyone who can point the finger at the culprit.

The Confession and the Truth

A few weeks later, a piece of news shocked everyone. A man voluntarily surrendered to authorities in Cavite. He was identified as Juvenil Miranda Cacayuran .

According to Juvenil, who was convinced by his own mother to surrender, his intention was simply to steal. He happened to pass by the apartment and saw the window open. He entered and took the victim’s bag and cellphone while she was sleeping.

But he was not satisfied. He went back to get another cellphone that Eden Joy was holding. At that moment, the girl woke up and screamed. This is where Juvenil’s mind went dark. He covered the victim’s mouth, stabbed her with a knife, and according to him, “lost himself” when he carried out the delicate abuse.

He fled to Batangas and Pasay, where he sold the stolen goods for just a few hundred pesos—a very small price in exchange for the life and dreams he had lost.

Justice and DNA Evidence

Although the family had doubts about whether Juvenil was just a “Fall Guy,” science has finally put an end to the questions. DNA tests showed that the samples obtained from the victim’s body were a “100% match” to Juvenil. This is strong evidence that implicates him in the crime.

Despite strong evidence and his own confession, Juvenil entered a “Not Guilty” plea at his arraignment—a standard legal process, but one that brought new pain to the Villiete family. However, authorities maintained that they had enough evidence to sentence him to life in prison.
