Vince Gill honored both his family — by blood and by choice — as he accepted one of country music’s most prestigious recognitions during the CMA Awards.
On Nov. 19, Gill received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, a distinction reserved for artists whose impact on the genre is both historic and enduring. Before he stepped onstage, the audience was treated to a heartfelt musical tribute featuring Brandi Carlile and Patty Loveless performing Gill’s classic hit “When I Call Your Name.”
After the performance, country icon George Strait arrived to present the award. He praised Gill warmly, saying, “There is not a more deserving person to receive this honor, which bears the name of the true icon himself, Mr. Willie Nelson.”

Gill opened his acceptance speech with humor, joking, “It’s not lost on me that we had to have girls come out here and sing for me tonight. None of the boys can get up that high.” He then reflected on the significance of the award, noting, “This is amazing. In the history of this award, I think it’s been given to maybe nine or ten people. And that list of people is astounding.”
He went on to thank his management team and family for their constant support. Before leaving the stage, Gill offered a touching message to the award’s namesake: “Willie, if you’re out there listening — 92 years old and still inspiring us. God bless.”
Born in Oklahoma, Gill began his career as both a session musician and solo performer. He contributed to David Grisman’s 1983 album “Here Today” and released his debut EP the following year. His breakthrough came in 1990 with the hit single “When I Call Your Name,” followed by the monumental success of his 1992 album “I Still Believe in You,” which went quadruple platinum and established him as a defining voice in country music.
Throughout his career, Gill has released 20 albums, sold more than 30 million records, and charted 45 singles. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007 and has earned 18 CMA Awards and 22 Grammys — achievements that highlight his influence and longevity.
His history with the CMA Awards is extensive. In addition to his many wins and the lifetime achievement honor, he famously hosted the ceremony every year from 1992 to 2003, becoming a staple of the event’s legacy.
Gill remains active in both solo and collaborative work. He continues to perform with the Eagles at select Sphere concerts in Las Vegas and recently renewed his deal with MCA Records. His latest EP, “I Gave You Everything I Had,” was released in October.
The 59th annual CMA Awards were held at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena and aired live on ABC, with Lainey Wilson serving as host.
