On March 17, 2019, during the final night of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, country legend George Strait created a magical family moment that fans still remember. In front of a record-breaking crowd of 80,108 fans at NRG Stadium, Strait invited his 6-year-old grandson, George Harvey Strait III—affectionately known as Harvey—to join him on stage for a special rendition of “God and Country Music.”
Dressed in a blue-and-white plaid shirt and jeans, young Harvey gripped the microphone with both hands, a nervous smile lighting up his face. As the song built, Harvey joined his grandfather for the final chorus, charming the audience and turning the performance into a touching celebration of family, faith, and music.
Written by Luke Laird, Barry Dean, and Lori McKenna, “God and Country Music” appears on Strait’s 2019 album Honky Tonk Time Machine. Notably, Harvey also contributed vocals to the studio version, marking his very first musical recording.
This unforgettable duet didn’t just showcase the close bond between grandfather and grandson—it celebrated the timeless appeal of George Strait’s music, connecting generations and touching the hearts of fans young and old.
