Tim McGraw Honors His Late Father Tug McGraw With Birthday Tribute at the “Field of Dreams”

Country superstar Tim McGraw paid a moving tribute to his late father, legendary MLB pitcher Tug McGraw, while headlining the first-ever concert at the iconic Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville, Iowa. The emotional night took place on what would have been Tug’s 81st birthday, making the performance even more meaningful.

Tim McGraw’s Father Was Legendary MLB Pitcher Tug McGraw

Though the world knows him as a Grammy-winning country artist, Tim McGraw was born Samuel Timothy Smith in Louisiana. For much of his childhood, he believed his stepfather, Horace Smith, was his biological dad.

At just 11 years old, Tim discovered the truth when he found his birth certificate while searching for a school project. The document revealed his biological father was none other than Frank Edwin “Tug” McGraw Jr., a professional baseball player and World Series champion.

Tim met Tug shortly after but didn’t develop a close relationship with him until he turned 18. After graduating high school in 1985, Tim adopted the McGraw surname, and father and son remained close until Tug’s passing in 2004.

Tug spent his final months with Tim and his wife Faith Hill at their Tennessee home. That same year, Tim released one of his most iconic songs, “Live Like You Were Dying,” inspired by his father’s battle with brain cancer.

Tim McGraw Headlines Historic Field of Dreams Concert

The Field of Dreams movie, released in 1989, is centered on themes of baseball, family, and father-son relationships—making it a fitting place for McGraw’s tribute.

On August 30, 2025, Tim headlined the very first concert at the movie site, joined by artists including Dani Rose, Hailey Whitters, and Ty Myers. Reflecting on the timing, he wrote after the show:

“Iowa!! You guys brought it last night! First ever concert at [The Field of Dreams Movie Site] and on Tug’s birthday too! Hard to top that!!”

He also joked about looking out into the cornfield to see if Tug and his late uncle Hank would “walk out and say hello,” referencing the film’s famous ghostly imagery.

Iowa Crowd Sings “Happy Birthday” to Tug McGraw

During the show, Tim paused to honor his father and invited the audience to join him in singing “Happy Birthday” to Tug. Thousands of fans sang together, creating a heartfelt moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the evening.

The tribute served as a full-circle moment for Tim McGraw—celebrating his music, his family legacy, and the everlasting bond between father and son on one of the most symbolic stages in America.
