MANILA, Philippines — Television host Boy Abunda released his 2023 unaired interview with Liza Soberano who revealed her breakup with former love team partner and boyfriend Enrique Gil.

Liza confirmed earlier this week her split with Enrique on the “Can I Come In?” video series hosted by Sarah Bahbah. The actress said on the August 14 video that the breakup occurred three years ago, placing it just months before Boy’s 2023 interview was conducted in early March 2023.

At the time, Boy interviewed Liza following the latter’s “This Is Me” vlog release, where she wished to pivot her identity and career track. Many who saw vlog release wondered where Enrique fit in her career plans.

Boy said during the August 18 episode of “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda” that he asked Liza that very question, which the actress confirmed that she and Enrique had broken up.

The host revealed that Liza requested him not to release that portion of the interview because she thought Enrique was not yet prepared for the public to learn of their split. Boy’s team respected Liza’s request.

After consulting with lawyers, Boy then showed the unseen 12-minute footage from that March 2023 interview he had with Liza.

‘Separate ways’

In the unaired video, Boy asked Liza about her situation with Enrique, and Liza confirmed that she and Enrique decided to go their separate ways.

Liza attributed the split to misaligned points of view and values, as well as the changes she went through the previous year, 2022. She said it was hard to for them to support each other during that time.

The actress shared how people would ask their marriage plans at that time since she and Enrique had been together for eight years.

“I came to a point where I didn’t know if that’s what I wanted anymore. There’s so much more that I want to achieve… it just doesn’t line up,” Liza said, acknowledging that Enrique was older and was more likely to be thinking about settling down.

She also said the breakup conversation was difficult but assured they ended on good terms with no ill feelings towards one another.

Liza further acknowledged it was her love team and relationship with Enrique that propelled her success, but in her view, her whole being was about being attached to someone else.

With everyone asking about Enrique following her “This Is Me” video, Liza wondered why people did not also support her choice to grow without having to rely on another person.

“It’s scary to come forward because it’s such a big change and you don’t know how people are going to take it,” Liza explained her decision to not immediately announce their breakup, similar to Enrique’s own feelings on the matter.

Liza also assured that James Reid, her fellow artist and manager at the time under Careless, had no involvement in the breakup since Boy brought his name up. She also said that there was no third party in her breakup.

The actress issued apologies to Enrique for any miscommunication they had and for not being able to see his own struggles. She commended how her ex-boyfriend remained supportive of her.

Boy’s messages

After the video ended, the episode returned to Boy in the “Fast Talk” studio where he thanked Liza for her openness.

Boy shared being struck by Liza’s comments in the “Can I Come In?” video that she first felt worthy of love because of Enrique and her fans.

The host also praised Liza for opening up about her traumatic childhood, which has hopefully helped others understand the actress better.

“Naiintindihan na rin natin na despite that fear, she’s choosing herself for peace and happiness first. She chooses to move forward and give that little girl inside of her named Hope a voice,” Boy said, wishing her success in Hollywood.

Boy ended with a message for Enrique offering a space to discuss the breakup, whether on-air or away from the camera.
